Obama joins Mamdani for Bronx preschool visit

Former U.S. president Barack Obama met New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani for the first time on Saturday during a visit to a childcare center in the Bronx. The two leaders spent time with preschoolers, reading the children’s book Alone and Together and joining them in singing the classic song The Wheels on the Bus.

The event marked a friendly public introduction between Obama, a leading figure in the Democratic party, and Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who recently passed his 100th day in office. Obama has reportedly offered to serve as an informal advisor as the new mayor navigates the challenges of governing the country’s largest city.

Mamdani took office in January after campaigning on a platform focused on improving affordability in New York City and directing government resources toward working-class residents. His progressive policy agenda and rising profile have made him one of the most closely watched figures in Democratic politics.

At the same time, Mamdani has been working to maintain a functional relationship with Donald Trump, Obama’s Republican successor. The mayor has met with Trump twice at the White House to discuss federal issues affecting New York.

However, tensions have recently surfaced. Trump criticized Mamdani’s tax policies on social media, accusing him of harming the city and warning that federal funding could be at risk. Despite these disagreements, Mamdani continues to engage with federal officials while advancing his local policy priorities
