Safety alert for HiPP jars sold at SPAR Austria

Baby food manufacturer HiPP has issued a precautionary recall of a specific range of jars sold in more than 1,000 SPAR supermarkets across Austria due to safety concerns.

The company announced that its HiPP Vegetable Carrot with Potato baby food jars may have been tampered with, stating that it cannot rule out the possibility that a dangerous substance was introduced into the product. HiPP emphasized that the issue appears to stem from suspected external criminal interference affecting the SPAR Austria distribution channel, and not from any problem in its production or quality control processes.

A spokesperson for SPAR confirmed that the recall impacts approximately 1,500 stores in Austria only, and does not affect SPAR outlets in other countries. The supermarket chain described the action as a precautionary measure to protect consumer safety.

Both HiPP and SPAR have urged customers who purchased the affected jars from SPAR Austria not to consume them. Consumers can return the products to any SPAR store for a full refund.

Authorities in the Austrian region of Burgenland are investigating the incident and have appealed to the public for information. Police have not yet issued further public comment.
