Messi: World Cup Final Pain Runs Deep
Lionel Messi has spoken publicly for the first time since Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, saying that the disappointment will take time to overcome.
Argentina fell to Spain on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, ending their hopes of defending the World Cup title. The defeat marked the third World Cup final of Messi’s remarkable career. He previously lost the 2014 final, lifted the trophy in 2022, and now finishes as runner-up again in 2026.
The 39-year-old Inter Miami captain was visibly emotional after the final whistle and is widely expected to have played his last World Cup match. Although he did not speak to reporters after the game, Messi shared a heartfelt message on Instagram the following day.
“The pain is huge, and this wound will take time to heal,” Messi wrote. “But I choose to remember all the good moments—the matches we turned around with determination, the unforgettable memories we created, and the incredible support of an entire nation. Together with this team’s hard work and commitment, we brought Argentina back among the world’s best once again.”
Messi also praised his teammates for reaching back-to-back World Cup finals and thanked Argentine fans for their unwavering support.
“It is difficult to fully appreciate what we achieved right now, but reaching two consecutive World Cup finals is something this group should be proud of. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every message and every show of support. Once again, we united our country and shared the pride of being Argentine. I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”
Despite the defeat, Messi enjoyed an outstanding tournament. He scored eight goals in eight matches, finishing second in the Golden Boot race behind France’s Kylian Mbappé.
Argentina’s journey to the final was filled with dramatic moments. The defending champions survived extra-time battles against Cape Verde in the Round of 32 and Switzerland in the quarterfinals, while late comebacks helped them defeat Egypt in the Round of 16 and England in the semifinals.
However, Spain’s disciplined defense proved too strong in the final. Argentina, reduced to 10 men late in extra time, fought until the end but could not find the equalizer that had rescued them so many times throughout the tournament.
