UK Tightens Rules on Illegal Worker Employment

The UK government has announced stricter measures targeting businesses that employ people without the legal right to work, with the new rules set to take effect on 1 October, according to the Home Office.

Under the updated regulations, employers who knowingly hire illegal workers in sectors such as food delivery and construction could face fines of up to £60,000 for each illegal worker. In the most serious cases, offenders may also receive prison sentences of up to five years.

The government is also extending compliance requirements to gig economy companies. From October, these businesses will be legally obligated to carry out Right to Work checks to verify that workers are authorized to work in the UK before they begin employment.

Officials say the measures are designed to strengthen immigration enforcement, reduce illegal employment, and ensure that businesses comply with UK labor and immigration laws.
