Texas Coaster Malfunction Leaves 8 Students Trapped
Eight students were rescued after spending nearly four hours stranded on a roller coaster at Galveston’s Pleasure Pier in Texas following a mechanical malfunction Thursday evening.
The students became trapped on the Iron Shark coaster while climbing toward the ride’s signature 100-foot drop. The ride suddenly stopped, leaving them suspended in an upright position near the top of the track.
Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and evacuated the amusement pier while firefighters organized a rescue operation. Using an extended ladder and safety harnesses, rescuers carefully lowered each student to safety one at a time.
All eight riders were safely brought down by approximately 8:30 p.m., ending an ordeal that lasted several hours.
Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela said the students were understandably shaken after the experience but were otherwise in stable condition. Medical checks were conducted to monitor for dehydration after the prolonged wait in the heat.

The students were participating in a school field trip organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and STEM Academy High School, both connected to Houston Independent School District.
In a statement, school officials expressed relief that all students, staff members, and chaperones were unharmed. They also thanked first responders and amusement park employees for their swift rescue efforts.
Pleasure Pier Chief Operating Officer Terry Turney said the roller coaster experienced an unidentified issue during its initial ascent. He emphasized that the emergency stop system functioned as intended, immediately halting the ride to protect passengers.
Turney added that the Iron Shark coaster will undergo a full safety inspection before returning to operation.
