Record Heat Draws Parisians to Water

Police officers monitored the area and reminded residents about safety restrictions, but the hot weather kept many swimmers in the water throughout the afternoon. The situation underscored the difficulties officials face when extreme temperatures drive people toward public waterways that are not designated for swimming.

Residents at the canal described limited options for escaping the heat, pointing to overcrowded housing and a lack of accessible cooling spaces. Some swimmers said previous supervised bathing programs had increased trust in the canal’s water quality, while others argued that cool public areas are becoming increasingly necessary during prolonged periods of high temperatures.

Authorities continued to warn about the dangers of swimming in the canal, highlighting risks such as accidents, hidden debris and polluted water.

The gathering took place as France experienced one of its hottest May periods on record. Temperatures reached 34C in Lyon and 32C in Toulouse as a powerful heat dome spread across western Europe.

Climate experts say the 2026 heatwave has already exceeded the historic May 1922 event in both intensity and duration. They note that record temperatures, unusually warm nights and the unusually early arrival of widespread heat reflect a broader pattern of more frequent and severe heatwaves linked to human-caused climate change, particularly across Europe, where temperatures are rising faster than the global average.
