Uber Adds New Rider Safety Checks
Uber has introduced new safety features in the UK, including in-app audio recording and rider verification, aimed at improving security and building trust between passengers and drivers.
The new audio recording tool allows riders and drivers to record sound before or during a trip through the Uber app. Recordings are encrypted and stored securely on the user’s phone rather than being automatically shared with Uber.
The company said it can only access the recordings if they are uploaded as part of a safety report. If no complaint or report is filed, the audio will be automatically deleted after two weeks.
Drivers will receive a notification if recording is activated before the journey begins and may cancel the booking without penalty. However, if a passenger starts recording during the trip, drivers will not be notified immediately to avoid escalating potentially unsafe situations. Drivers will be informed later if the recording is submitted with a safety report.
The audio recording feature is now available across most of the UK, with London set to follow at a later date.
Uber is also introducing a rider verification system. Beginning next week, passengers will be able to verify their identity by uploading an ID and selfie or through approved third-party databases. Verified users will receive a badge displayed on their profile, with wider rollout expected from June.
Uber driver and GMB union representative Kola Olalekan welcomed the change, saying verified badges provide greater confidence when accepting bookings.
Safety campaigners also praised the new measures. Lucy Duckworth of Survivors Trust said the updates are an important step toward creating a stronger safety culture and helping both riders and drivers feel more secure during journeys.
