Mayor Mamdani Lifts Bedtime for Knicks Kids
As the New York Knicks prepare for the 2026 NBA Finals, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has offered young fans a lighthearted reason to celebrate beyond basketball.
In a playful move, Mamdani signed an executive order symbolically suspending bedtime rules for school-aged Knicks supporters during the championship series against the San Antonio Spurs. The mayor shared the announcement on social media alongside photos and video from the signing event, which included children cheering on the decision.
“Many decisions that come with being mayor are difficult,” Mamdani said in his post. “This one wasn’t.”
The gesture highlights a familiar challenge for sports-loving families. NBA Finals games are scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, part of a long-standing television strategy designed to capture prime-time audiences and accommodate viewers on the West Coast. Those late tip-offs often leave younger fans choosing between sleep and watching their favorite teams compete on the biggest stage.
Still, the mayor’s declaration comes with limits.
While bedtime may be unofficially relaxed, school schedules remain unchanged. New York City public schools will continue operating throughout the Finals, with classes running until June 26. That means students watching the Knicks from June 3 through June 10 — and potentially later if the series goes the distance — will still need to wake up for school the next morning.
Meanwhile, young Spurs fans have an easier schedule. Schools in San Antonio had already started summer vacation by the end of May, sparing students there from balancing Finals excitement with early alarms and classroom responsibilities.
So while New York’s youngest basketball fans may get mayoral approval to stay up late, they won’t be getting a break from school.
