Iraola Emerges as Favourite for Liverpool Job

Liverpool have begun the search for a new manager after confirming the departure of Arne Slot following a disappointing season.

The Dutch coach left Anfield on Saturday after Liverpool ended their Premier League campaign in fifth place, well behind champions Arsenal. Despite delivering only the club’s second league title in three decades during his time in charge, a difficult season and declining performances ultimately led to the decision.

Supporters had grown increasingly frustrated as Liverpool struggled for consistency, suffering numerous defeats throughout the campaign. Reports also suggested tension within the squad, with Mohamed Salah among those publicly calling for a more intense style of football similar to the high-energy approach seen under former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Club officials reportedly made the decision with reluctance, acknowledging Slot’s achievements and contribution to Liverpool. However, the board believes the team now requires a tactical refresh, with a stronger focus on aggressive, attacking football and greater urgency on the pitch.

In a statement, Liverpool confirmed Slot’s immediate departure and thanked him for his work, highlighting his Premier League success and expressing appreciation for his efforts.

Attention has quickly turned to finding a replacement, with Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate. The Spaniard recently left Bournemouth after his contract expired, ending an impressive three-year spell on the south coast.

During his time at Bournemouth, Iraola earned widespread praise for building an exciting and competitive side despite regularly losing key players. He guided the club to European qualification for the first time in its history, finishing just behind Liverpool in the league standings.

Although Iraola had been linked with Crystal Palace and reportedly held discussions with AC Milan, Liverpool now appears to be his most likely destination.

Speaking about his future after Bournemouth’s season concluded, Iraola said he had delayed making any decisions until the campaign ended. He explained that choosing his next club would depend more on instinct and the right environment than simply the size of the opportunity.

Should Liverpool appoint Iraola, he would take charge of one of English football’s biggest clubs as they prepare for another new chapter
