Royal Mail Post on Starmer Exit Draws Criticism

Several Labour MPs have criticised Royal Mail after the postal service posted a joke about Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to step down.

Following Starmer’s emotional speech on Monday, in which he outlined a timetable for his departure, Royal Mail shared a post on X saying: “Moving home? Remember to redirect your mail.”

The post featured a mock mail-redirection form listing “10 Downing Street, London” as the old address, alongside an image of the famous black door of Number 10. The caption read: “For life’s unexpected moves.”

The joke drew criticism from Labour politicians. Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton, described the post as “unnecessary” and called it a “second-class response” from Royal Mail.

Callum Anderson, Labour MP for Buckingham and Bletchley, also condemned the post, writing: “Really @RoyalMail? Unnecessarily poor form.”

Former Labour deputy leader Tom Watson labelled the post “appallingly insensitive.”

However, many social media users reacted positively, describing the joke as “hilarious” and “brilliant.”

After announcing his resignation, Starmer did not deliver a planned House of Commons update on last week’s G7 summit in France. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy addressed MPs instead.
