Red alert as UK faces record-breaking heatwave

Households across the UK are being urged to learn the signs of heat-related illness as forecasters warn of exceptionally high temperatures that could pose a serious risk to health.

The Met Office has issued a rare red extreme heat warning covering parts of England and Wales from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach between 38°C and 40°C in some areas, potentially breaking the UK’s longstanding June temperature record set in 1976.

The intense heat will be accompanied by high humidity and so-called “tropical nights,” where overnight temperatures remain above 20°C. These conditions can make it harder for the body to cool down and recover, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

In response, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued red and amber heat-health alerts across England, warning that the extreme weather could have widespread effects on public health. Officials say the heat may lead to serious illness and, in some cases, pose a danger to life.

Health experts are encouraging people to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and checking on vulnerable individuals such as older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

The NHS has highlighted an important “30-minute rule” regarding heat exhaustion. While heat exhaustion is usually not serious if a person can cool down within 30 minutes, medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist or worsen. If heat exhaustion progresses to heatstroke, it becomes a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.

Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, excessive sweating, headaches, nausea, and weakness. Heatstroke may cause confusion, loss of consciousness, or a dangerously high body temperature and should be treated urgently.

Authorities are advising the public to remain vigilant as the heatwave intensifies and to follow official guidance to stay safe during the exceptionally hot conditions.
