US Anthem Performance Sparks Online Debate

American soccer fans had mixed reactions after a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before France’s World Cup match against Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.

Singer and actress Idina Menzel, widely recognized as the voice of Elsa in the animated film Frozen, performed the U.S. national anthem at Lincoln Financial Field as part of celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Backed by a live ensemble featuring drums, strings and keyboard, Menzel delivered a performance that sparked debate online. While many fans inside the stadium applauded the performance, some viewers watching from home criticized the arrangement and vocal style.

On social media, several users argued that the anthem was performed with too much artistic interpretation, with comments suggesting it strayed too far from the traditional version. Others described the rendition as overly polished, with a few claiming it sounded as though vocal effects had been used.

The performance concluded with fireworks and a military flyover, adding to the Independence Day festivities. Unlike most World Cup matches held in the United States, where the national anthem is not routinely performed before every game, organizers made an exception because the match fell on July 4.

Following the anthem, The Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale joined with a musical ensemble associated with Jimmy Fallon to perform “America the Beautiful” during the pre-match ceremony.

Ahead of the event, Menzel shared her excitement on social media, saying she was honored to perform the anthem as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

Meanwhile, attention soon shifted to the World Cup action on the field, where France took on Paraguay in a knockout-round clash. Led by star forward Kylian Mbappé, France entered the match as one of the tournament favorites. Paraguay, however, arrived with confidence after producing one of the competition’s biggest surprises by eliminating Germany in a penalty shootout in the previous round.
