Plans Consider Reversing Frogmore Renovation

Plans are reportedly being explored that could undo some of the extensive renovations carried out at Frogmore Cottage, the former UK home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Grade II-listed property in Windsor was given to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II following their wedding in 2018. At the time, major refurbishment work transformed five separate residential units into a single family residence at a reported cost of £2.4 million.

Although the couple moved into Frogmore Cottage and welcomed their son Archie while living there, they remained at the property for only around 10 months before stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California.

The renovation costs were initially covered through the Sovereign Grant, which is funded through public money linked to Crown Estate revenues. However, Harry and Meghan later repaid the full £2.4 million, covering both refurbishment expenses and rent.

According to reports from The Sun, officials are now considering various possibilities for the property’s future use, including dividing it back into multiple homes. Sources indicate that these discussions are still at an early stage, with no final decisions taken and no construction work underway.

The focus of the review is said to be ensuring the long-term occupation of the cottage.

In 2023, Harry and Meghan were asked to leave Frogmore Cottage, which had remained their only residence in the UK. The request came shortly after the publication of Harry’s memoir Spare.

Royal financial records from 2018–19 described the refurbishment as a complete redesign and restoration of five properties that had been in poor condition, combining them into an official family home for the Sussexes.

The cottage was later reportedly offered to Prince Andrew as part of efforts to move him from Royal Lodge, though he declined the proposal and currently resides on the King’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
