Flooding Disrupts Heathrow Train Services

Travellers heading to or from Heathrow Airport are facing significant disruption after a burst water main flooded railway signalling equipment, severely affecting transport links between central London and the airport.

Rail services to Heathrow have been heavily impacted. Flooding caused major signalling failures, leading to the suspension of both the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express services between Paddington and Heathrow terminals. At the same time, planned weekend engineering works have shut down the Piccadilly line between Heathrow and Acton Town.

As a result, Heathrow — the UK’s busiest airport — is currently without direct rail or Tube connections. For many passengers, buses are the main public transport option available, creating longer and more complicated journeys.

Frustrated travellers shared their experiences online. One passenger described expecting a smooth journey via the Elizabeth line after quickly clearing Heathrow, only to discover the route was flooded and replaced by a combination of buses and trains. Another warned that delays and limited transport could cause people to miss flights.

According to National Rail, the flooding occurred after a burst water main between Paddington and Heathrow submerged the signalling system and blocked all lines in the area. Disruption is expected to continue at least until late morning.

Heathrow Airport confirmed the situation, stating that no rail services are currently operating to or from the airport. The airport advised passengers to allow additional travel time and consider alternative transport such as buses or coaches while apologising for the inconvenience.

Transport for London reported that the Elizabeth line remains partly suspended between Heathrow Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 and Hayes & Harlington, while services between Hayes & Harlington and Paddington are experiencing minor delays.

Passengers seeking alternative routes can use buses, taxis, or private hire vehicles, though road transport may involve higher costs. Heathrow Express ticket holders are permitted to travel on Great Western Railway services using reasonable alternative routes. Nearby stations served by GWR include Hayes & Harlington, West Drayton, and Southall.
