“David Attenbara” Name Wins Fans Online
Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed an adorable new arrival: a baby capybara, marking the first capybara birth in Scotland in nearly two decades.
The tiny pup, born to first-time parents Luna and Rodney, has already captured hearts online despite not yet having an official name. Zookeepers are still waiting to complete the youngster’s first health check, meaning its gender has not yet been confirmed.
Fans on social media quickly flooded the zoo with playful naming ideas. One of the most popular suggestions was “David Attenbara,” inspired by legendary broadcaster David Attenborough. Others proposed names such as “BarbaraCapybara,” “David Attencapybara,” and even the pun-filled “Capy-chino.”

However, the zoo may already have paid tribute to Attenborough elsewhere. Earlier this week, Edinburgh Zoo announced the birth of Scotland’s first-ever baby two-toed sloth, named “Atty” in his honour.
Keepers estimate the capybara pup currently weighs between 1.5 and 2.5 kilograms — roughly the same as a six-pack of Irn-Bru. A formal check-up in the coming weeks will confirm both its weight and sex.
Animal keeper Jonny Appleyard praised the new parents, saying Luna and Rodney have been doing an excellent job caring for their baby. He added that while the pup is still shy, it has begun exploring its surroundings more confidently, usually staying close to its mother.
Visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the youngster are being encouraged to visit soon, as capybara pups grow rapidly.
The zoo has been celebrating more than one major milestone recently. Alongside the capybara birth, staff are also excited about the arrival of baby sloth Atty. Head keeper Jess Brown described the moment as “groundbreaking” for both the zoo and Scotland, adding that the young sloth is already showing plenty of personality while clinging closely to its mother.Baby Capybara, Edinburgh Zoo, David Attenbara, Capybara Pup,
