Late Hours Approved, Many Pubs Stay Closed
ndreds of pubs are expected to remain closed during England’s World Cup last-16 match against Mexico, despite the government allowing licensed venues to stay open until 5am.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that pubs across England and Wales would be permitted to extend their opening hours for the highly anticipated fixture, which kicks off at 1am on Monday. The move follows calls from MPs to relax licensing rules beyond the previously approved 2am closing time for England’s World Cup matches.
Under the temporary nationwide extension, pubs do not need to apply individually for permission to remain open until 5am.
However, not every venue plans to take advantage of the extended hours. Some pub operators have cited staffing shortages, while others in residential areas say they will close at their usual time to minimise disruption for nearby residents.
Andrew Gallagher, Brand and Marketing Director at Greene King, welcomed the decision, saying the company was pleased to offer fans the opportunity to enjoy the match together.
“There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere in our pubs, and this gives supporters the chance to come together, soak up the occasion and, hopefully, celebrate,” he said. “We expect strong demand, so we encourage guests to reserve their place as early as possible.”
England booked their place in the Round of 16 after a 2-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday and will now face Mexico in a match that could see supporters celebrating into the early hours of the morning.
