Crunch Talks Loom for Weakened PM Starmer
Tensions are rising inside Downing Street as Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares for a crucial meeting with Health Secretary Wes Streeting amid growing unrest within the Labour Party.
During Wednesday’s edition of ITV’s Good Morning Britain, political correspondent Louisa James said the Prime Minister had become “weakened” but remained determined to stay in office despite mounting calls for his resignation.
James explained that Starmer was effectively challenging his critics to act, suggesting he was telling potential rivals: “If you want to challenge me, make your move.”
The talks with Streeting come after days of speculation about the Health Secretary’s future and whether he could emerge as a serious leadership contender. Although some reports claimed Number 10 had managed to neutralise the immediate threat, insiders say tensions between the two camps remain high.
According to James, Labour infighting may briefly ease due to the King’s Speech taking place later in the day, with senior figures reluctant to overshadow the major constitutional event.
Allies of Streeting reportedly indicated he would avoid making public comments after his meeting with Starmer because he did not want to distract attention from the King’s Speech. However, behind closed doors, pressure on the Prime Minister is said to be intensifying.
Sources close to Streeting are believed to be seeking clear answers on how Starmer plans to restore confidence in his leadership following growing criticism from MPs and party figures.
James added that if Streeting leaves the meeting unconvinced by Starmer’s plans, speculation over a possible resignation or leadership challenge could quickly return.
The Prime Minister has so far refused to step down and continues to insist he will only leave office if formally challenged under Labour Party rules.
