Mystery operation brings Banksy statue

A new artwork by Banksy has appeared in central London, leaving many people wondering how such a large installation was carried out without official permission.

James Peak, who created The Banksy Story podcast for BBC, questioned how the artist managed to transport and install a massive resin statue in such a high-security area.

In a video shared on Instagram, Banksy offered a glimpse into the operation. The footage shows traffic cones marking off the space as a large truck arrives. Stabilizers are deployed, and workers in high-visibility clothing carefully lift the statue into place using a hook mechanism. Although the sculpture likely took months to create, the installation itself appears to have been completed quickly—likely during the early hours to avoid attention.

Peak suggested that Banksy relies on a highly skilled and experienced team. He compared them to professional crews capable of setting up major concerts in a short time, noting that they are both creative and extremely organized. According to him, the team likely surveyed the area in advance and chose the quietest time to carry out the installation, completing it within minutes.

Location

The statue has been placed in Waterloo Place, in the St James’s area of Westminster. The location is surrounded by notable landmarks, including statues of Edward VII and Florence Nightingale, as well as the Crimean War Memorial. The area is also close to government buildings, embassies, and private clubs.

Public Reaction

The artwork has been widely praised online. Many commenters described it as “classic Banksy,” highlighting its timely and sharp political message. International media have also picked up the story, reinforcing Banksy’s reputation for surprising and thought-provoking public installations.

Peak noted that the piece captures a specific political moment, depicting a leader obscured by a flag and seemingly on the verge of embarrassment. He suggested that the work may be a critique of strong leadership and militaristic attitudes.

Official Response

Westminster City Council confirmed that it did not grant permission for the installation, as it had no prior notice. Despite this, the council welcomed the artwork as an exciting addition to the city’s public art scene.

What Happens Next?

Banksy’s works have sometimes been stolen in the past, although the size of this sculpture makes that unlikely. Some of his pieces have later been preserved or displayed in museums.

For now, the council is reviewing its options. Officials have taken initial steps to protect the statue, but it remains on public display for people to view and enjoy.
