Ancient Burned Roman Loaf Discovered in Dig

Archaeologists in Switzerland have uncovered a rare 2,000-year-old Roman bread loaf during excavations at the ancient site of Vindonissa in the town of Windisch. The discovery marks the first Roman bread ever found in Switzerland and offers new insight into daily life inside a Roman military settlement.

The loaf was discovered during an excavation that began last August ahead of a major residential development project. Officials from the Canton of Aargau announced the find in April after experts completed an initial examination.

According to archaeologists, the bread first appeared as a charred round object during excavation work. The fragile artifact was carefully removed along with the surrounding soil and transported to a restoration laboratory for analysis.

Experts from the University of Basel believe the object is almost certainly a burned Roman bread loaf. The bread measures roughly 10 centimeters across and about three centimeters thick. Additional scientific testing will be carried out in Vienna to determine the ingredients used in its preparation.

Researchers explained that Roman bread discoveries are extremely uncommon because bread normally decomposes over time. Preservation is only possible when loaves are burned, similar to the famous carbonized breads discovered in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

The bread was found within the grounds of Vindonissa, once an important Roman legionary camp. Archaeologists say the discovery highlights the historical importance of the site, which continues to reveal evidence of Roman military and commercial life.

Excavations also uncovered traces of an early fortification system, workshops, metalworking waste, tools, spearheads and projectile points. A large clay oven discovered near the camp walls suggests that commercial and craft activities were already taking place in the area during the camp’s earliest phases.

Although rare, ancient bread discoveries have occurred elsewhere in recent years. In Türkiye, archaeologists announced the discovery of a 5,000-year-old Bronze Age bread loaf in 2024. Officials also uncovered a 1,200-year-old burned loaf bearing the image of Jesus Christ at the ancient site of Eirenopolis.
