Trump Skips Game 4 After MSG Controversy

U.S. President Donald Trump is not expected to attend Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, following the attention and controversy surrounding his appearance at Game 3, according to reports.

Trump made history on Monday by becoming the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. He watched Game 3 at Madison Square Garden alongside his granddaughter Kai Trump, Knicks owner James Dolan, and several members of his administration.

During the national anthem, cameras showed Trump on the arena’s giant screens, prompting a mixed reaction from the crowd. While some fans applauded, others booed. Trump later rejected reports that he was loudly booed, telling reporters that he mostly heard cheers and describing the atmosphere as enthusiastic.

On the court, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115–111, reducing New York’s lead in the best-of-seven championship series to 2–1.

Trump’s presence had a significant impact beyond the game itself. Security measures implemented by the New York Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service created a large security zone around Madison Square Garden. Several streets were closed to vehicles and pedestrians, and fans faced airport-style security screenings that led to long lines stretching for blocks outside the arena.

The restrictions also affected local businesses and fan activities. Bars and restaurants near the venue reported lower-than-expected foot traffic, while a popular outdoor watch party near Madison Square Garden was canceled because of the security requirements. Many fans instead gathered around Bryant Park, where large crowds watched the game and celebrated Knicks baskets throughout the evening.

Reactions among fans were divided. Some criticized the disruption caused by the presidential visit, arguing that it reduced the excitement surrounding the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. Others welcomed Trump’s attendance, saying it was notable that a sitting president chose to attend such a major sporting event.

The game attracted numerous high-profile guests, including actors Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Ben Stiller, and Timothée Chalamet. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani was also among those in attendance.

According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Trump will not return for Game 4 due to scheduling commitments and official duties. His absence means the extensive security perimeter and related disruptions seen during Game 3 are not expected to be repeated.

With the political spotlight shifting away from the series, attention is expected to return to basketball as the Knicks seek to regain momentum and strengthen their advantage over the Spurs. Across New York City, enthusiasm for the team’s playoff run remains strong, with landmarks such as the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center illuminated in the Knicks’ orange and blue colors in support of the franchise’s long-awaited return to the NBA Finals.
