Vegan Cream Cheese Debate Erupts on X
Media personality and former Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz sparked online debate after criticizing the vegan cream cheese options available at New York City bagel shops.
In a post on X Sunday morning, Lorenz compared New York and Los Angeles bagel scenes, arguing that while she dislikes LA bagels overall, many shops there offer cashew-based vegan cream cheese alternatives. She said New York shops often either lack vegan cream cheese entirely or rely on brands she considers overly processed, expressing hope that New York mayoral figure Zohran Mamdani could help improve the situation.
The post quickly gained traction online, drawing millions of views and a wide range of reactions. Lorenz restricted replies on the original thread, though screenshots circulated widely and prompted additional discussion elsewhere on the platform.
Critics mocked what they viewed as an appeal for government involvement in a niche consumer preference. Some commenters joked about political intervention in bagel-shop menus, while others argued the post reflected excessive expectations about public policy and personal tastes. A few respondents, including some vegetarians, also weighed in with differing opinions about vegan options.
Lorenz later pushed back against the criticism, describing many negative responses as overly serious and politically motivated. She joked that her critics would struggle with the culture of high-end Los Angeles grocery stores, referencing Erewhon, a luxury supermarket chain known online for premium-priced products.

As criticism continued, Lorenz suggested her original comment had been partly tongue-in-cheek. The following day, she posted a similar message reversing the comparison, joking that Los Angeles bagel shops should “get with the times” because some use unconventional toppings on everything bagels. She referenced local Los Angeles politicians in the same playful format.
Later, Lorenz shared a photo of herself holding a bagel with vegan cream cheese, continuing the discussion while keeping replies to that post closed as well.
