Police Probe Mysterious Numbers on Mall Grounds

The U.S. Park Police has launched an investigation after the numbers “86” and “47” were discovered marked on a section of grass at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the location of President Donald Trump’s UFC Freedom 250 event scheduled for this weekend.

Images captured by EarthCam indicate that the markings were visible as early as Wednesday afternoon. The number “8” appeared particularly noticeable due to discoloration in the grass, which had turned brown. Officials have not yet determined what caused the discoloration.

The incident has attracted attention because the phrase “86 47” has been the subject of political controversy in recent months. Earlier this year, former FBI Director James Comey faced scrutiny after posting a photograph on social media showing seashells arranged to form the numbers “86 47.” Authorities alleged the post could be interpreted as a threat toward President Trump, the 47th president of the United States. Comey denied any intent to encourage violence.

In a statement provided to ABC News, the U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed that the matter is under investigation.

“The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated. Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,” the department said.

The United States Secret Service referred questions about the case to the U.S. Park Police. Police officials said the cause of the grass discoloration remains unknown, but samples have been collected for laboratory testing.

On Thursday, National Park Service personnel were seen cordoning off the affected area, while members of the National Guard helped direct visitors away from the site as investigators examined the scene.

Authorities have not announced any suspects or provided further details about how the markings appeared. The investigation remains ongoing.
