Travis Kelce received public backing from fellow NFL star George Kittle after facing criticism online for a lighthearted moment during an NBA playoff game with Taylor Swift.
Kelce attended the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers playoff matchup alongside Swift and drew attention when he quickly drank a beer during a break in the action. Swift reacted with laughter and briefly covered her face as the crowd watched.
The moment sparked debate on social media, with one user criticizing Kelce and suggesting his behavior was not that of a positive role model. Kittle, the San Francisco 49ers tight end and longtime friend of Kelce, stepped in to defend him.
Responding on X, Kittle dismissed the criticism and suggested the fan was taking the situation too seriously, arguing that Kelce was simply enjoying himself during the NFL offseason.
The exchange escalated when the critic shifted the discussion toward unrelated NFL media controversies, referencing reporting involving coach Mike Vrabel and journalist Dianna Russini. Kittle questioned the connection between the topics and continued defending Kelce, emphasizing that the Chiefs star was attending a playoff game, entertaining fans, and behaving responsibly.
Kittle also poked fun at the criticism, joking that the online attention was a “big moment” for the commenter before promoting the 49ers’ upcoming appearance in Australia.
His reference pointed to San Francisco’s scheduled season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne on September 10. However, Kittle’s own availability for that game remains uncertain after he suffered an Achilles injury during the playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Although Achilles recovery can be lengthy, optimism remains within the 49ers organization. Quarterback Brock Purdy recently praised Kittle’s dedication to rehabilitation, saying his teammate consistently goes above and beyond in his preparation and leadership. According to Purdy, Kittle’s work ethic and energy continue to make him a central figure within the team.
