Burnham Wins Backing of 322 Labour MPs

Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has taken a commanding lead in the Labour Party leadership race after securing the backing of 322 Labour MPs on the first day of nominations.

The strong level of support leaves Burnham just one nomination short of making it mathematically impossible for any rival candidate to gather the 81 MP nominations required to enter the contest. No other Labour MP has declared a candidacy so far.

In a post on X, Burnham thanked MPs for their overwhelming support.

“As the first day of nominations draws to a close, I am deeply grateful to the 322 Labour MPs who have put their trust in me and nominated me for Leader of the Labour Party,” he said.

Burnham added that the broad support reflected a shared belief that Britain needs a new political direction. He pledged to shift power away from Westminster, reshape the economy to benefit working people, and deliver economic growth across every part of the country.

He also vowed to strengthen the role of Labour MPs by ensuring the voices of their constituents are better represented in government while bringing together all parts of the Labour movement around a common purpose.

Nominations will remain open until next Wednesday. To advance to the next stage of the leadership contest, Burnham must also secure the support of three affiliated Labour organizations, including at least two trade unions.

If those requirements are met, a special party conference on July 17 is expected to formally confirm Burnham as the new Leader of the Labour Party. He is then expected to become the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister on July 20.
