Product Withdrawn Over Allergen Risk
Waitrose has issued an urgent recall of one of its bakery products after discovering that some packs may contain barley that is not listed on the label, posing a potential health risk to customers with allergies.
The recall affects Waitrose & Partners 4 Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns sold in packs of four, with a best before date of 6 June 2026. The product was available both in stores and online across England, Scotland and Wales.

According to an alert issued by the Food Standards Agency on 4 June, the buns may contain barley despite the ingredient not being declared on the packaging. Barley is classified under UK food regulations as a cereal containing gluten and is one of the 14 allergens that must be clearly identified on food labels.
Customers who are allergic to barley are advised not to eat the product, as consuming it could trigger an allergic reaction.
The recall applies only to the 4 Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns with the specified best before date. Other Waitrose hot cross bun varieties, including St Clements, Free From and Mini Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns, are not affected.
Waitrose is offering a full refund to customers who purchased the recalled product. Shoppers can return unopened or partially used packs to any Waitrose store without providing a receipt.
In its customer notice, Waitrose said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to barley, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No receipt required.”
