AI-Powered Surgical Tool Used in UK Operation for the First Time

A new artificial intelligence (AI) system has been used during a live operation in the UK for the first time, marking a significant step forward in surgical technology.

The tool, called Eureka, helps surgeons by colour-coding different parts of the body during procedures. Designed by doctors in Japan, the system was trained using thousands of videos of surgical operations. By highlighting anatomical structures in real time, it assists surgeons in identifying areas that need to be protected or dissected, potentially reducing the risk of errors.

The technology was first used in the UK on Thursday during a bowel resection performed on a woman in her 60s at St Mark’s Hospital, a specialist bowel hospital in northwest London.

According to consultant surgeon Kapil Sahnan, the system acts like an additional assistant in the operating room. He explained that Eureka can identify hidden anatomical structures that may not be immediately visible to the surgeon, providing extra guidance during the procedure and helping to improve patient safety.

Comparing the technology to modern navigation systems, Mr Sahnan said surgeons have traditionally relied on their expertise much like drivers once depended on paper maps. Eureka, he suggested, is similar to how GPS apps such as Waze transformed navigation by offering real-time guidance.

Researchers and medical professionals are now working to evaluate the system’s effectiveness and determine how it can be introduced more widely. Mr Sahnan expressed hope that, if proven beneficial, the technology could become available in hospitals across the country within the next few years, making surgery safer for patients and supporting surgeons during complex procedures.

The successful use of Eureka highlights the growing role of AI in healthcare and its potential to enhance precision, safety, and decision-making in the operating theatre.
