Hackney Fire Shuts Down Two Rail Lines

Rail services in east London have been severely disrupted after a large fire broke out near Hackney on Sunday evening, prompting a major emergency response.

Thick black smoke was seen rising over the area close to Hackney Downs Station, with videos shared online capturing the intensity of the blaze.

The London Fire Brigade deployed eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters to Cottrill Gardens after receiving the first emergency calls at around 6pm.

According to firefighters, the fire involved a static caravan, two vehicles, and part of a nearby grass embankment. Crews from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and surrounding stations were sent to tackle the incident.

The fire has affected local transport, with two rail routes suspended while authorities respond to the situation.

Transport for London reported severe disruption on the Mildmay Line, with no trains operating between Stratford and Gospel Oak. The Weaver Line, which runs between Liverpool Street and Chingford, has also been suspended.

Firefighters remain at the scene and the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

In a statement, the London Fire Brigade confirmed: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a fire on Cottrill Gardens in Hackney. A static caravan and two cars are alight, as well as part of a grass embankment. The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

The incident is ongoing and further updates are expected.
