Tourism tax alert for package holiday travellers

Holidaymakers booking trips with major UK travel providers including easyJet, TUI and Jet2holidays are being reminded to factor in extra tourism charges when planning their summer getaways.

As demand for overseas holidays continues to rise ahead of the busy summer season, millions of British travellers are securing package deals through some of the country’s largest holiday companies. However, customers are being warned that the advertised holiday price may not include all mandatory local fees.

The additional costs are linked to tourism taxes imposed by many popular destinations. These charges vary depending on factors such as the country visited, the length of stay and whether travel takes place during peak season.

Travel firms typically display an estimated tourism tax alongside the package price during the booking process. In most cases, the fee must be paid directly to the hotel or accommodation provider upon arrival.

The tax applies equally to all visitors staying in destinations where such schemes are in place, regardless of which airline or package holiday company they book through.
