Labour Leadership Crisis Deepens

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced mounting pressure on Saturday after Labour’s heavy losses in local elections triggered fresh calls for him to step aside.

The crisis intensified when Labour MP Catherine West announced she was prepared to challenge Starmer for the party leadership if no other contender emerged by Monday.

Labour suffered its worst municipal election setback for a governing party since 1995, prompting growing unrest among party lawmakers. More than 20 MPs are reported to have either publicly or privately urged Starmer to outline a timetable for his departure.

Despite the backlash, Starmer rejected suggestions he should resign.

“I’m not going to walk away from this,” he told British media earlier in the day.

In an effort to steady his leadership, Starmer brought in two senior Labour veterans as advisers: former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman.

According to Starmer’s office, Brown will focus on defence, security investment and improving relations with the European Union, while Harman will work on policies addressing misogyny, violence against women and girls, and economic opportunity.

However, the appointments failed to quiet internal dissent. Speaking to BBC Radio, West said Labour’s cabinet should quickly agree on a succession plan.

“If there are no leadership hopefuls who come forward tomorrow, then Monday morning I will put my name forward to stand for the Leader of the Labour Party,” she said.

West added that she currently had support from 10 MPs, though she indicated she would prefer a more prominent candidate to enter the race.

A formal leadership challenge would still face major hurdles. Under Labour Party rules, a challenger must secure the backing of 20% of Labour MPs — currently 81 lawmakers — to qualify for the ballot.

Several potential rivals also face obstacles. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is not currently an MP, while former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner is still dealing with unresolved tax-related controversy following her resignation last year.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has also faced scrutiny because of his association with Peter Mandelson, now the UK ambassador to the United States, whose past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have drawn criticism.

While several cabinet ministers publicly reaffirmed support for Starmer on Friday, the growing rebellion inside Labour suggests his authority is under increasing strain less than two years after leading the party to a landslide general election victory.
