Delta cuts service on short flights

Passengers flying on shorter routes with Delta Air Lines this summer should expect a change: no onboard food or beverage service.

The airline announced it will scale back in-flight service on approximately 450 daily flights—about 9% of its schedule. Starting May 19, the update is part of an effort to standardize the onboard experience across its network, according to a company spokesperson.

Under the new policy, flights covering 349 miles or less will no longer include any food or drink service. This applies to routes such as Los Angeles to San Francisco.

For flights of 350 miles or more, passengers in Delta Comfort and Main Cabin will continue to receive full food and beverage service. These longer flights make up roughly 14% of the airline’s daily operations.

Delta’s move aligns with similar policies from other major U.S. carriers. United Airlines provides snacks only on flights exceeding 300 miles, while American Airlines does not offer food or beverages on routes shorter than 250 miles.
