Viral On-Pitch Engagement Turns Sudden Split
Costa Rican footballer Derrickson Quirós has announced the end of his engagement just days after proposing in front of thousands of fans at a league match in Guatemala — a moment that quickly went viral across social media.
The midfielder, who represents Club Xelajú MC, proposed on the pitch at Estadio Mario Camposeco following his team’s 4–2 victory over Deportivo Marquense in Guatemala’s top division. Moments after the final whistle, Quirós got down on one knee in a romantic gesture that drew cheers from supporters and rapidly circulated online.
He later shared photos and video of the proposal on his social media accounts, publicly declaring his love and referring to his partner as his “life partner.” The blend of sporting triumph and personal celebration resonated widely, particularly across Latin American sports media.
Public proposals at football stadiums are not unusual, but they often attract significant attention due to the emotional atmosphere of matchdays and the high visibility of professional athletes. In this case, the scene gained additional traction as clips spread across digital platforms.

However, just three days later, Quirós confirmed that the relationship had come to an end.
Addressing the situation through social media, in comments reported by Latinus, he said: “Yes, it’s true that my relationship ended. It was a difficult personal situation, like any breakup, but I prefer to handle it with respect and maturity.”
He declined to provide further details, emphasizing that the relationship had been meaningful and that he wished to approach the matter privately. The midfielder, who has nearly 10,000 Instagram followers, thanked supporters for their understanding and requested respect during what he described as a challenging time.
“I’m not going to speak ill of anyone, nor go into details,” he added. “Now I’m focused on my career, my team, and continuing to grow as a person. I appreciate everyone’s support and hope they can respect this moment.”
According to Brazilian outlet Globo, his former fiancée also addressed the split briefly on social media, writing: “In the end, there will never be a better answer than the one that silence offers.” Neither has disclosed the reasons behind the breakup.
The episode highlights the increasingly blurred line between professional sport and personal life in the social media era. Athletes frequently share significant milestones with supporters, strengthening their public connection — yet that visibility can intensify scrutiny when circumstances change.

Although the engagement was short-lived, the viral proposal and swift breakup underscore both the opportunities and challenges of sharing private moments in public arenas.
Club Xelajú MC has not issued a statement regarding the situation, and there is no indication that it will affect Quirós’ role within the squad. For now, the midfielder has made clear his intention to refocus on football as he continues his campaign in Guatemala’s top flight.
