Swiss Alps Avalanche Derails Passenger Train

A powerful avalanche caused a Swiss passenger train to derail near Goppenstein in the Swiss Alps, leaving multiple people injured, local authorities confirmed.

According to police reports, nearly 30 passengers were onboard the BLS train when the avalanche struck the railway line, forcing the train off the tracks. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene.

Officials stated that five people were injured in the incident. One of the injured passengers was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment, while four others received medical care at the scene. Swiss media outlet Blick reported that the train driver was among those injured.

The derailment occurred in the mountainous region of the Swiss Alps, an area known for heavy snowfall and increased avalanche risk during winter months. Authorities are currently assessing the damage to the railway infrastructure and investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the avalanche.

Rail services in the affected area have been temporarily disrupted as cleanup and safety inspections continue.

Switzerland’s rail network is widely regarded as one of the safest in Europe, but extreme weather conditions such as avalanches can pose serious risks, particularly in alpine regions.

Further updates are expected as officials continue their investigation.
