UK Baby Formula Alert: 36 Possible Poisoning Cases

UK health authorities are investigating a potential baby formula contamination after 36 likely cases of infants developing symptoms consistent with poisoning were identified across the country, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The investigation follows a major infant formula recall announced on January 6, when a leading baby nutrition brand withdrew several batches of its core infant formula and follow-on products across Europe. The recall was issued due to possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin known to cause nausea and vomiting.

Approximately two weeks later, a second baby formula manufacturer recalled one batch of its infant formula, further escalating concerns among parents and healthcare professionals. The presence of the cereulide toxin has since led to product recalls in dozens of countries worldwide, prompting heightened scrutiny of infant food safety.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) stated that, given the wide distribution of the affected products before the recalls were announced, additional cases were anticipated. Hospitals across the UK were alerted to monitor for symptoms associated with cereulide poisoning in infants.

“Current surveillance indicators do not show unusual increases in reports of vomiting in children under the age of one for this time of year, but UKHSA are monitoring these outputs,” the agency said in its statement.

Health officials continue to advise parents to check product batch numbers, follow recall guidance carefully, and seek medical attention if infants display symptoms such as persistent vomiting, lethargy, or feeding difficulties.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work with manufacturers and international partners to determine the source of the contamination and prevent further incidents.
