Heathrow Disruptions After Massive US Winter Storm

A powerful and “historic” winter storm has swept across the United States, killing at least seven people, disrupting travel nationwide and grounding thousands of flights — including services to and from London Heathrow.

The massive storm system has triggered winter weather warnings for more than 118 million people, stretching across the eastern third of the country from Texas to New York. Schools and highways have been closed, and severe power outages have left hundreds of thousands without electricity.

Flights Cancelled and Airports Shut Down

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, more than 11,000 flights scheduled for Sunday were cancelled as airlines struggled with freezing conditions and strong winds. Major carriers halted operations at several airports, while Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., effectively shut down altogether.

International travel was also affected. Heathrow Airport confirmed widespread delays and cancellations linked to the United States travel disruption.

Deaths and Emergency Declarations

The storm has been blamed for multiple weather-related deaths. Two people died from hypothermia in Louisiana, while fatalities were also reported in Texas, Tennessee and Kansas.

President Donald Trump declared federal emergency disaster measures for 12 states, mostly throughout the Mid-South. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia issued their own state-level weather emergencies on Saturday.

Energy Strain and Bitter Cold Ahead

The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to deploy backup generation resources to protect major facilities, including data centers, amid fears of prolonged blackouts.

While the storm is expected to move off the East Coast and into the Atlantic by Monday, meteorologists warned that a surge of Arctic air would follow, extending dangerously cold temperatures and icy conditions across large parts of the country for several days.
