Chelsea Push for Jacquet Deal

Chelsea have reportedly agreed personal terms with Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, but still need to raise their offer if they are to secure the signing of the Arsenal target.

New Blues head coach Liam Rosenior is eager to strengthen his backline after taking over from Enzo Maresca earlier this month. Rosenior has made a mixed start to life at Stamford Bridge, defeating Charlton in the FA Cup and Brentford in the Premier League, but also falling to Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Despite praising the quality already in the squad, Rosenior is believed to be pushing for a centre-back before the January window closes. Maresca was frustrated last summer when the club failed to replace the injured Levi Colwill, and Rosenior shares the view that more depth is needed in defence.

Chelsea first registered their interest in French youngster Jacquet six months ago and have intensified talks since the start of the window. The 20-year-old signed a new contract with Rennes in May, but did so with an understanding that he could leave if a suitable offer arrived, with both Arsenal and Chelsea monitoring him.

Chelsea now appear to be leading the race, with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that personal terms have been agreed. Jacquet is said to be enthusiastic about a move to Stamford Bridge, but Rennes want a club-record fee of around £56 million to approve the sale.

Chelsea, however, have been reluctant to go above £50m and are hoping the Ligue 1 club will lower their demands. Rennes may use Arsenal’s admiration for the defender as leverage to hold out for a higher price.

Jacquet shone during France U19’s run to the Euro 2024 final and was named in the Team of the Tournament, further boosting his reputation as a future senior international.

Chelsea have yet to make a January signing, although the club often conducts major business closer to deadline day. On Saturday, the Blues moved to within two points of the Premier League top four after a 2–0 win over Brentford, with goals from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer.

Chelsea also confirmed the departure of Facundo, thanking him for his contribution and wishing him well in a brief statement. Rosenior has been tasked with guiding the club back into the Champions League, and defensive reinforcements are seen as key to that mission.
