Avalanche alerts issued in six UK regions

Six areas across the UK are now under avalanche alerts after an intense Arctic cold snap delivered heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures across the country.

The warnings were issued by the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) after widespread snow and ice disrupted travel and isolated some communities in the aftermath of Storm Goretti.

Two Amber ‘Considerable Hazard’ Alerts in the Highlands

SAIS has placed two amber avalanche warnings on parts of the Scottish Highlands, signifying a “considerable hazard”, while several other regions are under yellow ‘moderate hazard’ notices.

Amber alerts currently cover Ben Nevis, where heavy snowfall has accumulated over recent weeks. SAIS reports that evidence points to three avalanches having already taken place on the mountain, with snow reportedly funneling into gullies.

A second amber warning has also been issued for areas northeast of Creag Meagaidh.

Yellow warnings are in force across Glencoe and the Cairngorms National Park.

Temperatures Down to -12°C and Snow up to 30cm

The avalanche alerts follow a week of wintry conditions that saw snow depths reach 30cm (12 inches) in the worst-hit locations. Overnight temperatures in northern areas plunged to -12°C, while many parts of the UK were placed under Met Office snow and ice warnings.

Although southern regions are now experiencing milder and wetter weather, further snowfall and strong winds could destabilize existing snowpack and increase avalanche risk.

Most Avalanche Victims Trigger Their Own, Experts Warn

Avalanches are considered one of the most dangerous natural hazards in mountainous terrain. Changing temperatures, snow loading, and shifting wind patterns all affect the stability of the snowpack.

SAIS notes that around 90% of avalanche victims trigger the avalanche themselves, urging climbers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to monitor conditions closely before heading into the mountains.

More Cold Weather Possible

The Met Office long-range outlook indicates the potential for further cold spells and mountain snowfall over the coming days, which could keep avalanche risks elevated throughout the Highlands.
