Everything you need to know about Graham Foster’s shock comeback

Soap fans were left stunned on Monday night as Graham Foster made an unexpected return to Emmerdale, six years after he was believed to be dead.

The dramatic twist aired during an hour-long special episode on 5 January, which also featured a historic crossover with Coronation Street. The event marked the launch of ITV’s new “soap power hour” scheduling strategy, bringing the worlds of both long-running soaps together for the first time.

How Graham Foster Returned

Viewers last saw Graham in 2020, when he was seemingly killed by Pierce Harris. First introduced in 2017, Graham was best known as the legal guardian and father figure to Joe Tate, acting as his trusted right-hand man.

However, Monday’s episode revealed that Graham is very much alive. Disguised and keeping a low profile, he appeared during a dramatic multi-vehicle crash on a remote road in Corriedale. He was seen driving a van containing a mysterious woman named Jodie, who was tied up in the back.

Graham’s identity remained hidden until the final moments of the episode, when he was spotted secretly visiting the hospital to check on an injured Joe Tate following the crash—confirming his explosive return.

Who Plays Graham Foster?

Graham is portrayed by Andrew Scarborough, an actor known for his roles in Bad Girls and Downton Abbey. Since leaving Emmerdale in 2020, Scarborough has appeared in the British war film The War Below (2021), as well as popular TV dramas including Midsomer Murders and Father Brown.

What’s Next for Graham?

ITV soap boss Iain MacLeod teased that Graham’s return is far from a short-term shock.

“There’s never really an ending in a soap,” MacLeod said. “Stories go on forever, and you want things that originate in that episode—like the return of the mysterious, hooded stranger, Graham.”

Hinting at future storylines, he added that viewers may not have noticed the clues straight away, including the mystery prisoner in the back of Graham’s van.

A New Chapter Begins

With Graham Foster back in the fold and the identity of Jodie still unknown, Emmerdale is setting the stage for major twists in the weeks ahead. One thing is certain: Graham’s return is set to have lasting consequences for Joe Tate—and the village itself.
