Skipton Ranked Happiest Town in Britain

Skipton, the Yorkshire market town known as the “gateway to the Dales,” has been ranked the happiest place to live in Great Britain, according to Rightmove’s 14th annual Happy at Home Index. The town earned top marks for its access to nature, strong community spirit, essential services, and affordability.

Residents highlighted Skipton’s picturesque surroundings on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, its friendly atmosphere, and the convenience of local amenities such as schools and healthcare. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which winds through the town, adds to its scenic charm and outdoor appeal.

This is Skipton’s first time securing the No. 1 position, though it has consistently performed well in previous years—second in 2020 and sixth in 2023. The town has a strong history of recognition: it was named Britain’s best place to live by The Sunday Times in 2014 and recorded the highest happiness rating by the Office for National Statistics in 2017.

Local organisations echoed the survey results. Ian Rigarlsford of Skipton Building Society said the town embodies genuine community spirit and offers an exceptional work-life balance. Estate agent Patrick McCutcheon praised Skipton’s transport links to Leeds, Bradford, and Harrogate, as well as its historic castle, vibrant market, canal paths, and access to walking and cycling routes.

Skipton is also notable for being the birthplace of Tom Spencer, co-founder of Marks & Spencer, in 1851.

Following Skipton in this year’s rankings were London boroughs Richmond upon Thames and Camden, placing second and third respectively.
