Britain’s ‘Most Lucrative’ Speed Camera Issues 6,000 Fines in Two Months

A newly installed speed camera in Newton Abbot, Devon, has sparked major backlash after issuing nearly 6,000 fines in just two months, with frustrated drivers calling it Britain’s “most lucrative” speed camera.

Hidden Speed Camera on Ashburton Road Angers Locals

The device, located on Ashburton Road (A383), was activated in August. By October 10, authorities recorded almost 6,000 speeding offences in the 30mph zone — a stretch of road partially concealed by surrounding shrubbery. Many motorists claim the warning signs are unclear, making the camera difficult to spot.

Local residents have taken their concerns to Facebook, where a group called “A383 Ashburton Road speed camera victims” has quickly gained traction. Drivers are sharing their experiences, with some receiving multiple fines within days.

One distressed driver wrote:

“Just had 4 fines. Two in one day! I didn’t see the sign for the camera… I will lose my licence. I’m heartbroken.”

Another commented:

“I like to think I’m safety-conscious… However, I got caught twice in one week.”

Many users are calling for a collective challenge to the fines.

Police Defend the Camera After Serious Crash History

Despite the backlash, Devon and Cornwall Police stand by the installation, citing a significant history of accidents along this section of the A383. Between 2019 and 2023, there were nine injury collisions, including three serious crashes. Most involved pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists.

In a statement to Plymouth Live, authorities said:

“Traffic surveys showed typical overnight speeds of 40mph to 53mph in this 30mph zone. The high number of initial offences sadly confirms our concerns. This road has always been 30mph and is close to a children’s play park, family centre, sheltered housing, and two secondary schools.”

Police also noted that neither the council nor the police receive revenue from speed camera fines.
