Bezos Launches New AI Venture Prometheus

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder and former CEO of Amazon, is officially returning to a chief executive role—this time at a new artificial intelligence startup called Project Prometheus, according to a report from The New York Times. The company, which focuses on developing advanced AI solutions for engineering and manufacturing across multiple industries, has already secured an impressive $6.2 billion in funding, surpassing what many startups are able to raise in decades.

Bezos will lead Project Prometheus alongside Vik Bajaj, a respected physicist, chemist, and tech innovator. Bajaj is widely recognized for his work at Google X, where he co-founded the health-focused spinoff Verily. As co-CEOs, Bezos and Bajaj aim to position Project Prometheus as a major contender in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.

Rapid Growth and High-Profile Hiring

Although the exact founding date of Project Prometheus remains unclear, the startup has reportedly grown rapidly, already assembling a team of about 100 employees. According to the Times, the company has attracted top talent from leading AI organizations including OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta, signaling its ambition to become a major force in the sector.

Bezos has not yet disclosed the company’s headquarters, product roadmap, or technical approach. Nonetheless, interest is high, as the entry of one of the world’s richest individuals into the AI frontier adds new momentum—and new questions—to an already crowded field dominated by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta.

Concerns Over AI Industry Sustainability

The surge of investment into AI continues, but skepticism is also growing. Michael Burry—the investor famous for predicting the 2008 financial crisis—recently placed $1 billion in short positions against companies such as Palantir and Nvidia. Burry has warned that certain tech giants may be using accounting practices that “artificially boost earnings,” raising concerns about the long-term financial stability of the AI boom.
