UK heatwave forces London climate event cancel
A conference focused on tackling extreme heat has been cancelled as soaring temperatures continue to impact the United Kingdom during London Climate Action Week.
The event, titled “Extreme Heat: Improving Governance and Strengthening Action Around the World,” was scheduled to take place at the London School of Economics’ Shaw Library. Organizers announced its cancellation after the UK Met Office issued a red warning for extreme heat, citing concerns over public safety and the disruption caused by the heatwave.
The session was set to bring together experts to discuss the growing global threat of extreme heat, examine the need for stronger governance, and explore strategies to improve preparedness and resilience worldwide.
The UK has experienced an intense heatwave since Sunday, with conditions worsening over recent days. High temperatures have caused significant disruption to transport networks, leading to cancellations and delays across London Underground and rail services. Authorities have urged people to avoid non-essential travel where possible.
According to the Met Office, temperatures were forecast to reach up to 37°C (98.6°F) across much of England on Wednesday, with highs of 38°C (100.4°F) expected on Thursday and Friday. Forecasters also warned that temperatures could climb even higher in some areas as the heatwave continues.
