Brazen Seagull Steals Crisps From Greggs Store

A seagull was caught on camera stealing a packet of crisps from a Greggs bakery in Worthing, Sussex, in an unusual incident that has attracted widespread attention online.

Video footage, viewed millions of times on social media, shows the bird walking out of the store with a packet of Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar crisps it had apparently taken from a display rack. Once outside, the seagull used its beak to tear open the packaging before eating the contents on the pavement.

Witnesses were amused by the bird’s apparent confidence. One observer remarked that it was “not the usual type of shoplifter,” while suggesting that local birds have learned where food can be found. Another social media user joked that the seagull appeared experienced, judging by the way it opened the packet.

The incident comes as Greggs continues efforts to reduce theft across its stores. The bakery chain has introduced redesigned layouts in some locations, placing food and drinks behind counters to make shoplifting more difficult.

One example is the West Croydon branch in South London, which reopened after a refurbishment aimed at reducing theft and improving staff safety. Similar store formats are being tested in several locations, including Croydon, Peckham, Whitechapel, Upton Park, Birmingham, and Wilford.

Greggs was approached for comment regarding the seagull incident.
