World Cup Broadcast Interrupted by Licence Reminder

The BBC has faced backlash from some viewers after displaying a TV licence renewal message during its live coverage of a World Cup match.

During the second half of the Brazil vs Morocco game, a QR code appeared on screen encouraging viewers to purchase or renew their TV licences. Commentator Guy Mowbray also reminded audiences that a valid TV licence is required to watch the World Cup on BBC platforms, directing viewers to use the QR code if they needed to renew.

The move sparked criticism on social media, with some viewers describing it as poorly timed and unnecessary during live match coverage. One viewer questioned the decision to display a licence renewal QR code in the middle of a game, while others accused the broadcaster of prioritising licence fee promotion over the viewing experience.

Several comments expressed frustration at being reminded about TV licence requirements while watching the tournament, with some arguing that the message detracted from the sporting event.

The BBC has not publicly responded to the criticism. Under UK law, viewers generally need a valid TV licence to watch live television broadcasts or use BBC iPlayer. The broadcaster regularly reminds audiences of this requirement through various channels, though some viewers felt that including the message during a live World Cup match was inappropriate.
