Bristol Blue Glass Closes After 38 Years

A long-established British kitchenware and glassmaking business has shut its doors permanently after struggling with growing financial and operational pressures.

Bristol Blue Glass, known for its handcrafted blue glass products and based in Keynsham near Bristol, officially ceased operations today. The closure comes despite strong public support, including a petition signed by around 7,000 people urging the company to remain open and keep its factory in place.

The company said a combination of factors led to the difficult decision. Health issues affecting management, increasing fuel and rental expenses, and the cost of renovating facilities all contributed to mounting challenges. Owners also pointed to heavy taxation and difficulties faced by small businesses as additional burdens.

In a farewell message shared online, the business expressed sadness over the closure, thanking customers for decades of support and describing it as an honour to serve the local community.

Founded 38 years ago, Bristol Blue Glass sought to revive a historic glassmaking tradition that had disappeared for many decades. Bristol’s reputation for glass production dates back to the 18th century, when the city became known for skilled glass-blowers and thriving trade.

The company’s distinctive deep-blue glass was created using cobalt oxide, producing the vivid sapphire colour closely associated with the brand and the city’s glassmaking heritage.

The closure has sparked concern among supporters who fear traditional glassblowing may continue to decline. Many customers shared emotional messages, describing the loss as a blow to Bristol’s cultural identity and thanking the company for preserving an important craft.

Bristol Blue Glass’s Bath Road factory officially closed on May 31, marking the end of nearly four decades of business.
