Clark takes charge in Rotherham survival bid

Newcastle United legend Lee Clark has made a surprise return to football management after four years, taking charge of Rotherham United on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The League One side turned to Clark following the dismissal of Matt Hamshaw earlier today, with the club currently sitting 22nd in the table and six points from safety. His immediate objective is clear: steer Rotherham away from relegation and secure their place in the division.

This marks Clark’s first managerial role since his spells abroad, including time with Sudanese club Al-Merrikh and a brief stint at Al-Ittihad in Oman. His second period at Al-Merrikh ended abruptly in March 2022 after just 51 days in charge.

Clark brings valuable experience in relegation battles. During his last role in English football, he successfully guided Bury to safety in the 2016–17 season after taking over with the club in the drop zone. He also managed Birmingham City for two seasons, narrowly avoiding relegation in 2014 on goal difference.

However, not all of his rescue attempts have been successful. After leaving Birmingham, Clark joined Blackpool in October 2014, but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Championship, with the team winning only three matches under his leadership.

Earlier in his managerial career, Clark enjoyed greater success at Huddersfield Town, where he spent four seasons and led the team to two play-off finishes.

Now, he faces another tough challenge as he looks to revive Rotherham United’s season and keep them in League One.
