Man City’s Title Hopes Kept Alive with Late Win

Manchester City reignited their Premier League title challenge with a thrilling late comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield, overcoming a moment of brilliance and surviving a chaotic finale to secure a vital three points.

Pep Guardiola endured another nerve-shredding afternoon at a stadium that has rarely been kind to him. His fears appeared justified when Liverpool took the lead through a stunning free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai. From nearly 30 yards out, the Hungarian whipped the ball with the outside of his right foot, sending it curling beyond the motionless Gianluigi Donnarumma and in off the post. It was a goal worthy of deciding any match — but this game was far from over.

At kick-off, City trailed league leaders Arsenal by nine points and arrived on Merseyside having won just once in their previous six league matches. Despite dominating possession in the first half, they struggled to create clear chances and once again allowed their opponents back into the contest after the break. Liverpool, pushing for a Champions League place, grew in confidence as the Anfield crowd roared them on.

Just when City’s title ambitions seemed to be fading, their star players delivered under pressure. Bernardo Silva sparked the comeback in the 84th minute, finishing clinically after Erling Haaland outmuscled Ibrahima Konaté to nod the ball into his path from a deflected cross. Szoboszlai had inadvertently played Silva onside.

Moments later, chaos erupted. Matheus Nunes raced onto a long ball and was clattered by Alisson inside the penalty area. After a delay, referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot. Haaland showed no sign of nerves, confidently smashing the penalty past Alisson to put City ahead and spark wild celebrations among the away supporters.

The drama did not end there. In stoppage time, both goalkeepers were called into action as chances flew in at either end. Alisson even went forward for a corner, leading to frantic defending from City. A long-range effort from Rayan Cherki eventually rolled into the empty Liverpool net, but the goal was disallowed after Szoboszlai fouled Haaland during the build-up. Following a VAR review, Szoboszlai was sent off and the goal chalked off, a decision that satisfied neither side.

When the final whistle blew, Guardiola cut a relieved figure. It was only his second win at Anfield in 11 attempts, the first having come during the empty-stadium season of 2020-21. More importantly, Manchester City’s Premier League title dream remained alive.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration afterward, particularly over a second-half incident in which Mohamed Salah was pulled back by Marc Guéhi just outside the penalty area. Slot felt it warranted a red card, but only a yellow was shown. He also referenced previous controversial decisions that had gone against Liverpool in matches against City.

Despite Liverpool’s improved second-half performance and missed chances — including a close-range header from Hugo Ekitiké — City’s resilience and late surge proved decisive.

For Guardiola and his players, this was more than just a comeback win. It was a statement of belief, nerve, and championship mentality as the Premier League title race heads into its decisive phase.
