Taylor Swift Sets New Spotify Milestone as ‘1989’ Surpasses 10 Billion Streams

Taylor Swift has reached another major milestone on Spotify, with her 2014 album 1989 officially exceeding 10 billion streams. According to InMusic, the achievement makes Swift the first artist in the platform’s history to have five separate albums cross the 10-billion-stream threshold.

With 1989 joining Lover, Midnights, folklore, and reputation in the high-streaming category, Swift extends her lead as one of Spotify’s most consistently consumed artists across multiple musical eras. InMusic reports that Lover currently tops her catalog with nearly 14 billion streams, followed by Midnights and folklore, both above 11 billion.

No other artist has matched that level of sustained success across multiple projects. The Weeknd is the closest contemporary competitor, with three albums surpassing 10 billion streams, while Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa remain the only other female artists with more than one album to reach the milestone.

1989 was originally released in October 2014 and marked a definitive transition for Swift from country to mainstream pop. Named after her birth year, the album drew inspiration from 1980s synth-pop and featured production by Max Martin, Shellback, Jack Antonoff, Ryan Tedder, Imogen Heap, and Nathan Chapman.

The project generated multiple Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles — including “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Bad Blood” — and spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It became the best-selling album of 2014 in the United States and later won Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

Swift debuted as a country artist under Big Machine Records with Taylor Swift (2006) and Fearless (2008), followed by Speak Now (2010) and Red (2012), which introduced rock and electronic influences. Her pivot to pop with 1989 in 2014 was followed by the darker, hip-hop-tinged Reputation (2017). After signing with Republic Records in 2018, she released the eclectic pop album Lover (2019) and later re-recorded several early albums amid a dispute over master ownership.

Her 2020 albums Folklore and Evermore explored indie folk, while Midnights (2022), The Tortured Poets Department (2024), and The Life of a Showgirl (2025) returned to pop and soft rock stylings. She has accumulated numerous Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles throughout her career, including “Cardigan,” “Willow,” “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” “Anti-Hero,” “Cruel Summer,” “Is It Over Now?,” “Fortnight,” and “The Fate of Ophelia.”

Swift’s Eras Tour (2023–2024) and its companion concert film became the highest-grossing tour and concert film in history. She is also the first artist to be named IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year five times and the only artist with eight albums that each sold more than one million copies in their opening week in the U.S.

Recognized by publications such as Rolling Stone and Billboard as one of the greatest artists of all time, Swift was named Time’s Person of the Year in 2023 — the first individual from the arts to receive the honor. Her accolades include 14 Grammy Awards, including a record four for Album of the Year, alongside numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards.

Swift began pursuing music professionally in her early teens. After early rejections from Nashville labels, she focused on songwriting, learned guitar, and signed developmental deals that helped launch her career. Her family relocated to the Nashville area to support her ambitions, and by 2006 she had emerged as one of country music’s most promising young artists — a trajectory that has since evolved into one of the most successful pop careers of the 21st century.
