Sweeney returns to steamy thriller genre
Sydney Sweeney is set to make waves again in the upcoming season of Euphoria, where her character Cassie reportedly becomes an OnlyFans model. But before that storyline grabbed attention, fans recently rediscovered one of Sweeney’s earlier and much racier screen roles.
In 2021, the now 28-year-old starred in The Voyeurs, an erotic thriller released on Amazon Prime Video. Inspired loosely by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, the film follows a young couple—played by Sweeney and Justice Smith—who begin spying on their exhibitionist neighbors. Their curiosity soon spirals into obsession, pulling both couples into a dangerous entanglement.
Although The Voyeurs received lukewarm reviews from critics, it later found a second life with audiences after appearing on Tubi and recently went viral on social media. One popular movie account on X praised the film’s twist, prompting viewers to revisit the thriller and comment on its provocative storyline.
Sweeney has since returned to the erotic-thriller genre in The Housemaid, co-starring Amanda Seyfried. The Paul Feig–directed film has become a surprise box-office hit since its December release, crossing the $200 million mark globally. A sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy, is already in development, with Sweeney and Michele Morrone expected to reprise their roles. Seyfried’s return has not yet been confirmed.
Alongside its commercial success, The Housemaid has earned positive reviews for channeling the style of classic thrillers from the ’80s and ’90s.
Meanwhile, anticipation is building for Euphoria’s third season. Cassie’s new storyline—venturing into online adult content—has sparked debate among fans. Some argue the show is becoming overly sexualized, while others see the plot as a savvy way to expand the series’ audience.
Despite the mixed reactions, interest in the new season remains high—suggesting Euphoria may attract even more viewers when it finally premieres.
