Wizz Air Gets UK–US Charter Flight Permit
Low-cost European airline Wizz Air announced that it has received regulatory approval to operate flights from the United Kingdom to the United States. While the airline currently has no plans to launch regular commercial routes, the permit opens the door for charter operations, particularly for major sporting events and group travel.
Permit Granted by US Transportation Authorities
Wizz Air’s UK unit applied for a foreign air carrier permit from the United States Department of Transportation in January. The approval allows the airline to operate charter flights between the UK and the United States.
The company emphasized that it does not plan to start scheduled transatlantic services at this stage. Instead, it will focus on charter flights serving sports teams, fan groups, and tour operators organizing travel to major events in the US.
Charter Flights Planned for the 2026 World Cup
One of the key opportunities for these charter operations will be the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across North America.
Wizz Air said it plans to transport European football teams and supporters traveling to the tournament. The airline also aims to partner with tour operators arranging group trips to the United States during the event.
Matches during the tournament will be hosted across multiple US states, including Missouri and Massachusetts. Despite a recent decline in interest in some traditional US tourist destinations, airlines remain optimistic that visitor numbers will rebound this year, driven by the global appeal of the World Cup.
Airline Stocks Fall Amid Middle East Tensions
Despite the positive development, Wizz Air’s shares fell more than 3% during Friday trading. The decline came amid a broader selloff in airline stocks as carriers face rising uncertainty linked to escalating geopolitical tensions.
Airlines are struggling to absorb the impact of the intensifying conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Wizz Air has already warned that the Middle East conflict could reduce its fiscal 2026 net profit by approximately €50 million.
UK Strengthens Military Presence in Qatar
Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to rise. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain will send four additional Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar to strengthen its regional defense posture.
Starmer stated that the UK has the right defense strategy in place, although the country’s cautious response to the Iran crisis and a recent drone attack on a key British military base in Cyprus has raised concerns among some allies.
US President Donald Trump has also criticized the UK government, arguing that Britain has not provided sufficient support for US strikes against Iran.
