New Security Rules for U.S. Visas

The U.S. State Department has introduced new guidelines and enhanced vetting procedures for issuing visas worldwide, Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced. The updated policy instructs consular officers to apply additional criteria and evaluate emerging risk factors before approving any visa application

According to Pigott, the department has implemented a more rigorous vetting process designed to strengthen national security. He emphasized that “every visa decision is a national security decision,” highlighting the administration’s commitment to thorough, security-focused reviews.

The State Department continues to update its screening procedures to ensure that individuals entering the United States pose no threat to public safety. Pigott stated that the policy follows a simple principle: “We should not allow anyone into the country who could potentially cause harm.” The department plans further improvements to make the system more effective and more consistent.

Since returning to office in January, President Donald Trump has prioritized immigration enforcement, deploying federal agents to major U.S. cities and tightening controls at the U.S.–Mexico border. While the administration has frequently highlighted deportation efforts, these new measures signal a growing focus on reshaping legal immigration through stricter visa review processes.
